THIS work, published at the end of 1918, was written after the appearance of Karl Kautsky’s pamphlet, The Dictatorship of the Proletariat, in which Kautsky criticises Lenin’s State and Revolution and repeatedly reveals himself as an opponent of proletarian revolution and as an open counter-revolutionist. In The Proletarian Revolution and Renegade Kautsky, Lenin devotes himself chiefly to exposing Kautsky’s distortions and vulgarisations of the Marxist teachings on the state, proletarian revolution and proletarian dictatorship, and to the defence of the Russian proletarian revolution. In his pitiless criticism of Kautsky, in his exposure of the counter-revolutionary content of Kautskyism, and in his analysis of the experiences of the Russian Revolution, Lenin develops further his basic exposition contained in State and Revolution. In the present work Lenin pays special attention to the question of bourgeois and proletarian democracy, discussing this question on the basis of the class relationships in the proletarian revolution. Kautsky wrote his pamphlet when a revolutionary situation was developing swiftly in Germany. Under such conditions, and in view of the illusions still prevailing among the broad sections of. the working class with regard to the Social-Democracy and especially Kautsky, the substitution by the latter of the idea of “pure” democracy, i.e., bourgeois democracy, for the idea of proletarian dictatorship in the teachings of Marx, had the direct aim of diverting the attention of the proletariat from the struggle for the overthrow of the bourgeoisie, from the necessity for the establishment of its class dictatorship.

This is the first complete edition of the poetical works of JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER issued on the European side of the Atlantic. It is a reprint of the Cambridge Edition issued in 1894 by Messrs. Houghton, Mifflin & Co., of Boston. That was based on the Riverside Edition issued by the same house in America, and by Messrs. Macmillan & Co. in this country. For it, four years before his death, Mr. Whittier wrote introductions and head-notes, revised the text, arranged the poems in the order he thought best, and relegated to an appendix the poems he would, if the public had permitted, have allowed to pass into oblivion. He did indeed discard certain altogether. Up to that time therefore the Riverside was, in the poet’s judgment, the definitive edition of his works.

Foreward: I, Patrick Heron of Isle Rathan in Galloway’, begin the writing of my book with thanks to God, the Giver of all good, for the early and bountiful harvest which He has been pleased to give us here in little Scotland, in this year of His Grace, 17—. It is not the least of the Lord’s mercies that throughout all this realm, both hill-land and valley-land, the crops of corn, Merse wheat, Lowden oats, and Galloway bear, should be in the stackyards under thack and rape by the second day of September. So, with a long back-end before me, the mind running easy about the corn, and prices rising, I am not likely to get a better season of quiet to write down the things that befell us in those strange years when the hill outlaws collogued with the wild freetraders of the Holland traffic, and fell upon us to the destruction of the life of man, the carrying away of much bestial, besides the putting of many of His Majesty’s lieges in fear Now it will appear that there are many things in this long story which I shall have to tell concerning my self which are far from doing me credit, but let it not be forgotten that it was with me the time of wild oat sowing when the blood ran warm. Also these were the graceless, unhallowed days after the Great Killing, when the saints of God had disappeared from the hills of Galloway and Carrick, and when the fastnesses of the utmost hills were held by a set of wild cairds—cattle reivers and murderers, worse than the painted savages of whom navigators to the far seas bring us word. It was with May Mischief that all the terrible blast of storm began (as indeed most storms among men ever do begin with a bonny lass, like that concerning Helen of Troy, which lasted ten year and of which men speak to this day). The tale began with May Mischief as you shall hear. I keep the old name stilly though the years have gone by, and though now in any talks of the old days and of all our ancient ploys, there are the bairns to be considered. But it is necessary that ere the memory quite die out, some one of us who saw these things should write them down. Some, it is true, were deeper in than I, but none saw more or clearer, being so to speak at both the inception and the conclusion of the matter.

Embodied in a dialogue held in the garden of the Taj Mahal, at Agra. In this work, which is dedicated to the Earl of Dufferin, the Author, after minutely describing the beautiful Tomb and surrounding Gardens of the Taj Mahal, introduces a group composed of a learned Mirza, two singing-girls with their attendant, and an Englishman, who pass the night in the Mosque attached to the famous Monument, reading the Chapter of Sa’di upon ” Love,” and conversing upon that theme, with accompaniments of music and dancing. The larger portion of the Book is original, and comprises, besides the included translations from Sa’di, many lyrical pieces in the Persian manner, sung by the accomplished musicians, and also several novel Oriental Tales illustrating the dialogue.

The sections in this poem taken directly from the Persian are printed in italics, and present the third chapter of the Bostan nearly as it stands in the text of Sa’di. The bulk of the poem is original, though some passages imitate the Persian manner. Utmost acknowledgments are due to the prose translation of ” The Garden,” by Capt. H. Wilberforce Clarke, E.E., one of the very best and most faithful ever made from an Oriental classic. Those familiar with Persian literature will be aware of certain necessary modifications. The accomplished singing-girls are types from the life.

DEPUIS la traduction des caractères de Théophraste par La Bruyère, cet ouvragé a reçu des additions importantes; et d’excellents critiques en ont éclairi beaucoup de passages difficiles. En 1712, Needham publia les leçons de Dupôrt sur treize de ces caractères. En 1768, Fischer résuma dans une édition critique presque tout ce qui avoit été fait pour cet ouvrage , et y ajouta des recherches nouvelles. En 1786, M. Amadùzzi publia deux nouveaux caractères, que Prosper Petronius avoit découverts, et qui se trouvent, à la suite des anciens, dans un manuscrit de là bibliothèqùe palatine du Vatican. En 1790 , le citoyen Belin de Ballu traduisit ces deux caractères ett françois et les joignit à une édition de La Bruyère, dans laquelle il ajouta quelques notes critiques à celles dont Goste avoit accompagné la traduction de Théophraste dans les éditions précédentes.
