Description: Language: English In writing the history of a parish for either local or general use, it is necessary to know where to look for information. In these pages will be found attempts to give some brief hints under various heads, together with specific information as to records, manuscripts, and printed books, which bear upon the particular branch of the question. It seems, however, right that two or three general directions should first of all be given.

Description: Language: English Thomas Arnold (June 13, 1795 – June 12, 1842) was a British schoolmaster and historian, head of Rugby School from 1828 to 1841. (source wikipedia) Arnold was born on the Isle of Wight, the son of William Arnold, an inland revenue officer, and his wife Martha de la Field. He was educated at Winchester and Corpus Christi College, Oxford. There he excelled at Classics and was made a fellow of Oriel in 1815. His appointment to the headship of Rugby, the famous public school, after some years as a tutor, turned the school’s fortunes around, and his force of character and religious zeal enabled him to turn it into a model followed by the other public schools, exercising an unprecedented influence on the educational system of the country. He is portrayed as a leading character in the novel, Tom Brown’s Schooldays.

He was involved in many controversies, educational and religious. As a churchman he was a decided Erastian, and strongly opposed to the High Church party. In 1841, he was appointed Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford. His 1833 Principles of Church Reform is associated with the beginnings of the Broad Church movement.[1] He was also one of the Eminent Victorians in Lytton Strachey’s book of that name. His chief literary works are his unfinished History of Rome (three volumes 1838-42), and his Lectures on Modern History. He died suddenly of angina pectoris in the midst of his growing influence. His biography, Life of Arnold, by Arthur Penrhyn Stanley, one of Arnold’s former pupils, is considered one of the best works of its class in the language.

Extracted from preface: The sources from which this work has been drawn have necessarily been exceedingly various. It was in fact originally intended that the several parts should have been supplied by different writers, as in the instance of the valuable contribution which, in addition to his kind assistance throughout, has been furnished to the earlier part by Mr. Justice Coleridge; and although, in its present shape, the responsibility of arranging and executing it has fallen upon one person, yet it should still be clearly understood how largely I have availed myself of the aid of others, in order to supply the defects of my own personal knowledge of Dr. Arnold’s life and character, which was confined to the intercourse I enjoyed with him, first as his pupil at Rugby, from 1829 to 1834, and thenceforward, on more familiar terms, to the end of his life. To his family, I feel that the fewest words will best express my sense, both of the confidence which they reposed in me by entrusting to my care so precious a charge, and of the manifold kindness with which they have assisted me, as none others could. To the many attached friends of his earlier years, the occurrence of whose names in the following pages makes it unnecessary
to mention them more particularly here, I would also take this opportunity of expressing my deep obligations, not only for the readiness with which they have given me access to all letters and information that I could require, but still more for the active interest which they have taken in lightening my responsibility and labour, and for the careful and most valuable criticism to which some of them have allowed me to subject the whole or the greater part of this work. Lastly, his pupils will perceive the unsparing use I have made of their numerous contributions. I had at one time thought of indicating the various distinct authorities from which the chapter on his ” School Life at Rugby ” has been compiled, but I found that this would be impracticable. The names of some of those who have most aided me will be found in the Correspondence. To those many others, who are not there mentioned- and may I here be allowed more especially to name my younger schoolfellows, with whom I have become acquainted chiefly through the means of this work, and whose recollections, as being the most recent and the most lively, have been amongst the most valuable that I have received-I would here express my warmest thanks for the more than assistance which they have rendered me. Great as has been the anxiety and difficulty of this undertaking, it has been relieved by nothing so much as the assurance which I have received through their co-operation, that I was not mistaken in the estimate I had formed of our common friend and master, and that the influence of his teaching and example continues and will continue to produce the fruits which he would most have desired to see. The Correspondence has been selected from the mass of letters preserved, in many cases, in almost unbroken series from first to last. One large class- those to the parents of his pupils-I have been unable to procure, and possibly they could not have been made available for the present work. Another numerous body of letters-those which were addressed to scientific or literary men on questions connected with his edition of Thucydides or his History,-I have omitted, partly as thinking them too minute to occupy space wanted for subjects of more general importance; partly because their substance or their results have for the most part been incorporated into his published works. To those which appear in the present collection, something of a fragmentary character has been imparted by the necessary omission, wherever it was possible, of repetitions, such as must necessarily occur in letters written to different persons at the same time, -of allusions which would have been painful to living individuals,-of domestic details, which, however characteristic, could not have been published without a greater infringement on privacy than is yet possible,- of passages which, without further explanation than could be given, would certainly have been misunderstood. Still, enough remains to give in his own words, and in his own manner, what he thought and felt on the subjects of most interest to him. And though the mode of expression must be judged by the relation in which he stood to those whom he addressed, and with the usual and just allowance for the familiarity and unreservedness of epistolary intercourse, yet, on the whole, the Letters represent (except where they correct themselves) what those who knew him best believe to have been his deliberate convictions and his habitual feelings. The object of the Narrative has been to state so much as would enable the reader to enter upon the Letters with a correct understanding of their writer in his different periods of life, and his different spheres of action. In all cases where it was possible, his opinions and plans have been given in his own words, and in no case, whether in speaking of what he did or intended to do, from mere conjecture of my own or of any one else. Wherever the Narrative has gone into greater detail, as in the chapter on his ” School Life at Rugby,” it has been where the Letters were comparatively silent, and where details alone would give to those who were most concerned a true representation of his views and actions.

Description: Language: English Preface: In Scotland during the eighteenth century there were only two outstanding events which, after the Union, specially belong to its history the Rebellion of ‘15 and the Rebellion of ‘45. Besides these rebellions, we find as State affairs of Scotland chiefly obscure intrigues of factions, Whig and Tory, Presbyterian and Jacobite; measures managed by leaders of Scottish business, who were servile followers of English ministries; manoeuvres of Scots nobles and placemen who travel southwards on horseback or in coach to win favour with great statesmen at Westminster or courtiers at St. James’s figures not very real to us to-day as they flit across the stage, ” transient and embarrassed phantoms.” To the end of the century when Henry Dundas was ” uncrowned King” of Scotland, pulling every political wire, and making local magnates and voters in town and country obsequiously move like puppets at his will political life in North Britain was virtually non-existent.

This book, however, does not treat of stirring and striking episodes such as the Rebellions, with their elements of high romance not unalloyed with dingy intrigue: for these a sketch would be too little, and here a history would be too much. Still less does it concern itself with the ways of politicians, who often mistook state craftiness for statecraft, from the pettifogging schemers at the beginning of the century to the dictatorship and despotic party domination at the close: these interested the country a little at that time, but they interest us very little to-day. The following pages treat of the social condition of the country chiefly in the Lowlands and the internal changes through which it passed during a hundred years, with details which the historian dismisses with impatience as unconsidered trifles marring the dignity of his theme and disturbing the flow of his narrative. Yet, after all, it is in the inner life of a community that its real history is to be found in the homes, and habits, and labours of the peasantry; in the modes, and manners, and thoughts of society; what the people believed and what they practised; how they farmed and how they traded; how the poor were relieved; how their children were taught, how their bodies were nourished, and how their souls were tended. On this last subject it may be thought that too much has been said that the religious and ecclesiastical state of Scotland has been dealt with on a scale too large and disproportionate. It must, however, be remembered that such a part too large and disproportionate it also formed in the existence and concerns of the people. No doubt many of the religious ways and habits, the old-world theology, have long ago vanished, leaving only memories, humorous, pathetic, or bitter, behind them; curious convictions that once were charged with dangerous force in sectarian polemics are now cold and harmless, like exploded shells on an old battlefield. But it is impossible to understand the character and conduct of the Scottish people without knowing those bygone customs and beliefs which were once full of intense vitality. Nowhere were Church spirit so keen, Church influence so far-reaching, and Church affairs so intimate, as in Scotland. Probably no period was so quietly eventful in shaping the fortunes and character of the country as the eighteenth century. Others are more distinguished by striking incidents, others are more full of the din and tumult and strife which arrest attention and are treated as crises, although they may neither stir the depths nor affect the course of a people’s life; but in that century there was a continuous revolution going on a gradual transformation in manners, customs, opinions, among every class; the rise and progress of agricultural, commercial, and intellectual energy, that turned waste and barren tracts to fertile fields stagnant towns to centres of busy trade a lethargic, slovenly populace to an active, enterprising race an utterly impoverished country to a prosperous land. These facts constitute the real history of the Scots in the eighteenth century.
The literature of the period, which developed so marvellously after the middle of the century, is only slightly indicated in this study of the time. It is a subject full of interest and importance; but, though it came within the scope of this work, it could not be put within the bounds of its space.

Author: Oscar Kennett LYLE BORN 1839 in St Louis, St Louis Co., MO died 29/1/1917
Published: Printed By, Lecouver Press Company, 51 Vesey Street, New York City.1912
Description:

The aim of this book is to preserve to posterity facts of interest pertaining to the Lyle family. That the book has errors is more than probable, since much of the information received in correspondence was variable in dates and in the spelling of proper names. For such errors as appear, the explanation lies in my “telling the tale as told to me.” It has taken years to gather what the book contains. But a few years of delay would have made almost impossible of discovery many of the facts that are presented. In successful effort, in obliging posterity, and in the appreciation of the existing family, lie my only reward. OSCAR K. LYLE. This history of the Lyle family treats of the ancestors and posterity of four immigrant pioneers from Ireland who became settlers in the Valley of Virginia between the years 1740 and 1750. Their homes in Ireland were near Larne, on the Irish coast, in the County of Antrim; in Virginia, on Timber Ridge, in what is now Rockbridge County. These four settlers of the colonial period were Matthew, John, Daniel and Samuel Lyle. The first three of mention were brothers and paternal uncles of Samuel, who was a son of a Robert Lyle. Samuel Lyle, who was a farmer in Ireland, married, about 1680, Janet Knox, of Knoxtown. The names of his parents have not been ascertained. Janet Knox was a daughter of John Knox, the second husband of Sally Locke. Her first husband was Ephraim Knox, of no kindred to her second. Sally Locke was a daughter of David Locke, whose wife was Mary Wylie, and granddaughter of William Wylie, whose wife was Janet Black. From Samuel Lyle came six children: Mary, Isabella, Janet, James, Robert and one that died young. James Lyle, son of Samuel Lyle of mention, married, about 1700, Margaret Snoddy, of Ballyrickard-beg, a daughter of William Snoddy, whose wife was Jane Adams, of Ballysnodd. The Snoddys were a family from Scotland to Ireland about 1652. James Lyle had seven children: Elizabeth, Jenny, Matthew, John, Robert, Daniel and William. The surname Lyle, varied in orthography, is a territorial one. In its earliest form the ancestors of those now bearing it were denominated “de Insula/’ which means “of the island.” So far back as the eleventh century this “de Insula” attached to families living in the Isle of Wight and Isle of Ely in England and the Isle of Bute in Scotland. That any connection existed between the several families is questionable.

Author: EDWARD WALFORD, M.A. LATE SCHOLAR OF BALLIOL COLLEGE, OXFORD, AND FELLOW OF THE GENEALOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF GREAT BRITAIN . Walford, Edward (1823 Feb 1 – 1897 Nov 20), writer and compiler of reference works (source http://www.oxforddnb.com/index/101028462 )
Published: CHATTO & WINDUS, (1891) LONDON: 214 PICCADILLY
Description: Language: English THE COUNTY FAMILIES OF THE UNITED KINGDOM 1860 over 800 pages, 1891 over 1200pages, OR, ROYAL MANUAL OF THE TITLED & UNTITLED ARISTOCRACY OF GREAT BRITAIN & IRELAND. CONTAINING A BRIEF NOTICE OF THE DESCENT, BIRTH, MARRIAGE, EDUCATION, AND APPOINTMENTS OF EACH PERSON, HIS HEIR APPARENT OR PRESUMPTIVE, AS ALSO A RECORD OF THE OFFICES WHICH HE HAS HITHERTO HELD, TOGETHER WITH HIS TOWN ADDRESS AND COUNTRY RESIDENCES.Preface to the first edition: It is impossible for me to send forth to the public this work-the result of more than two years’ constant labour and research-without acknowledging, in terms of gratitude, the kind and generous assistance which I have received, from almost every quarter, in answer to the circulars which I have issued to the present representatives of the highest families in the three kingdoms, whether numbered among the ‘ titled! or the ‘ untitled’ aristocracy, who, with few exceptions, have freely communicated to me the information which I requested at their hands. Here and there, it is true, that my applications have been met with a refusal on the part of those who were most nearly interested; but even in these cases I have endeavoured to keep faith with the public, by instituting private inquiries among local friends X and correspondents, and by consulting a large library of useful books of reference. By these means I have been enabled to produce a volume which, in spite of numerous imperfections, embraces the whole of the titled, and by far the largest portion of the untitled aristocracy of the three kingdoms, and may, therefore, fairly lay claim to be styled, in common parlance, a ‘ Dictionary of the Upper Ten Thousand.’ I am well aware that the first edition of such a work must be far from perfect; and no one is more fully alive than myself to the numerous deficiencies to be found in this volume. I am equally aware that such a book must always remain, in one sense, imperfect in a country like our own, where, mainly owing to the influence of trade and commerce, individuals and families are continually crossing and re-crossing the narrow line which severs the aristocracy from the commonalty. But I can safely promise that, as often as a new edition of the ” COUNTY FAMILIES ” shall be called for, the book shall be found in a state more nearly approaching completion, by the constant addition of fresh families to the roll of its contents, and by carefully noting the various changes wrought day by day by the silent operation of births, marriages, deaths, and preferments, in the families whose names I record. I ought here more particularly to record my obligations, in the first instance, to the Clerks of the Peace and the Clerks of Lieutenancy who have kindly supplied me with the lists of the Magistrates and Deputy Lieutenants of the several counties * of England and Wales; as also to Thorn’s Irish Directory and Oliver and Boyd’s Edinburgh Almanac, for similar lists relating to those kingdoms respectively. The details of the work, where they have not been communicated to me personally by some member of the family, have been mainly worked out by consulting the Gazette and the pages of the Gentleman s Magazine-an invaluable mine of wealth to the genealogist and antiquarian, and useful also to one who, like myself, is a humble labourer in the field of contemporary inquiry. Besides these, the several County Histories which I have been able to procure, the Peerages and Baronetages of Lodge and Debrett, Hart’s Army List, O’Byrne’s Naval Biography, the Oxford and Cambridge Calendars and Lists of Graduates, and the obituary notices of the daily and weekly newspapers, have furnished me with useful materials. The constant accession of fresh materials in my hands, whilst these sheets have been passing through the press, while it accounts for the long delay in the appearance of the ” COUNTY FAMILIES,” has necessitated the adoption of a Supplement, in which will be found a long array of well-known names which ought properly to have appeared in the body of the work. I can only regret that they reached me so late, and promise that they shall be arranged in their proper place in the next edition. It is to be hoped that the public and subscribers to the work will pardon such errata as they may find on referring to their names ; and they will further oblige me if they will kindly communicate to me those errors, through my publisher, in order that they may be rectified in future editions. When they call to mind that every separate entry involves a statement of from five to fifty facts, inclusive of dates, the public will be able to realize some portion of the labour of an editor in preparing such a work as this for the press for the first time.I have not chosen the title of this work without deliberation. I have called my book a MANUAL OF THE TITLED AND UNTITLED ARISTOCRACY, and have accordingly arranged both these orders under a single alphabet, because I remember the words of James I., that ” the king, though he can make a noble, cannot make a gentleman,” and because the bearing of arms, not of titles, has ever been considered as the distinctive mark of true noblesse. E. W. 17, CHURCH Row, HAMPSTEAD, March 31, 1860.

Royal Manual of the Titled and Untitled Aristocracy of the Three Kingdoms. By E. WALFORD, M.A., Author of the “Shilling Peerage,” “Shilling Baronetage,” &c.; containing a Peerage, Baronetage, Knightage, and Landed Commoners of England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland, arranged under one Alphabet. This is an invaluable aid in Genealogical Research. It details more than 8000 familes living in the United Kingdon in 1860 and 1890.

Author: SMITH, William, Topographer.
Published: Birmingham, . May 21st 1830
Description: This county, the most central, is one of the most interesting in the kingdom, not only on account of the illustrious characters who have dignified it by their situation, great and memorable actions, but by its beauty of situation, extent, the commercial speculations carried on in it, and its manufactures, which add so largely to its stock of national wealth and importance. We should be wanting in justice not to mention, that England’s great poetical ornament, Shakespeare, was born in this county, whose master genius developed with equal felicity the beauties of nature and the images of art; of whom more will be said when treating of the
town which gave birth to. this great man. Confined to delineation, it is hoped that in every circumstance the delineations will, at any rate, he found to possess fidelity. This county is of an irregular figure, terminating in a point at the north and south, is bordered upon almost equally, by SIX counties, viz.
