(Note the alternative spelling of Carlisle).At a Meeting of the Cumberland and Westmoreland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society, held at Wigton, on the 31st of August, 1876, the Rev. Canon Simpson, LL.D., in the Chair, it was resolved: “That it is desirable to take steps to publish the Nicolson MSS., and that permission for so doing be asked from the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle.” Extract from the Minutes of the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle:— ” That Mr. Ferguson be informed that the Dean and Chapter assent to his application on behalf of this Society (headed Archaeological Society) for permission to print Bishop Nicolson’s MS. Visitation of the Diocese of Carlisle, the MS. of which is now in the Library, on the express understanding that the text alone be published.” (Covers the period 1703-1705). The following pages are comprised in a manuscript book in the handwriting of Bishop Nicolson. …. So far as, handwriting can be imitated by ordinary type I have endeavoured to produce an exact fac-simile of Bishop Nicolson’s manuscript; using Italics for the words underlined, adopting his spelling (ofttimes capricious) and his punctuation, and omitting (designedly) words, &c. MISCELLANY ACCOUNTS of the present State of the Churches, Parsonage and Vicarage-Houses, Glebe-lands, &c. in the several parishes within the Diocese of Carlile, as they appear’d to me by View or the credible Information of Witnesses hereafter mention’d. … a sample from the book “SOWERBY. The Vicar (Mr Waterson, aged 79) treated me and Mr Fleming with Oaten bread and Butter, pretty good beer, and English Spirits of 18d a Quart, together with some hints of his being displeas’d at John Todd’s looking after his place.
