EDITED BY R, S FERGUSON, M.A., F.S.A, Published by the Cumberland and Westmoreland Antiquarian and Archealogical Society. (Note the alternative spelling of Carlisle).At a Meeting of the Cumberland and Westmoreland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society, held at Wigton, on the 31st of August, 1876, the Rev. Canon Simpson, LL.D., in the Chair, it was resolved: “That it is desirable to take steps to publish the Nicolson MSS., and that permission for so doing be asked from the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle.” Extract from the Minutes of the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle:— ” That Mr. Ferguson be informed that the Dean and Chapter assent to his application on behalf of this Society (headed Archaeological Society) for permission to print Bishop Nicolson’s MS. Visitation of the Diocese of Carlisle, the MS. of which is now in the Library, on the express understanding that the text alone be published.” (Covers the period 1703-1705). The following pages are comprised in a manuscript book in the handwriting of Bishop Nicolson. …. So far as, handwriting can be imitated by ordinary type I have endeavoured to produce an exact fac-simile of Bishop Nicolson’s manuscript; using Italics for the words underlined, adopting his spelling (ofttimes capricious) and his punctuation, and omitting (designedly) words, &c. (accidentally) omitted in the manuscript, of which several instances occur. R.S.F. MISCELLANY ACCOUNTS of the present State of the Churches, Parsonage and Vicarage-Houses, Glebe-lands, &c. in the several parishes within the Diocese of Carlile, as they appear’d to me by View or the credible Information of Witnesses hereafter mention’d. … a sample from the book “SOWERBY. The Vicar (Mr Waterson, aged 79) treated me and Mr Fleming with Oaten bread and Butter, pretty good beer, and English Spirits of 18d a Quart, together with some hints of his being displeas’d at John Todd’s looking after his place. The Vicarage-House in as bad or a worse state than he found it in; the Hall cover’d with thick Oaken planks, but ye Room above so low as to be useless; the Study window (half) walled up, and ye Out houses ruinous. He has 40 Day work of Meadow in ye Gleab; but very Coarse. The Chancel (Sr H. Fletcher’s) small and in ill repair; half of it taken up with a large old-fashion’d seat, brought hither from ye Church of Oreystock by Mr Dalston of Thwaite. The Communion-Table wants Eails; and the Parish-Chest has no lock upon it. The Roof of the Church (as well as that of ye Quire) in an ill condition; but the Seats (all back’d with Wainscot) & the Church-yard Wall pretty good. On one of the North-windows there’s a picture of a Military person, in a blew Mantle and long heel’d Spurs, kneeling; and below it part of a Femal face with a Crown: which last I take to relate to ye Legend of St Mongah or Kentigern (to whom the Church is Dedicated) said to be begotten on a King’s Daughter by an Angel. Here are no Letter’d Monuments; neither in the Church, Chancel nor Church yard. The Chapple at Eaughton Head, in this parish is supply’d, ordinarily by ye Schoolmaster there, and once a month by Mr Kanyer; to whom the Vicar (since his own Infirmities have disabled him to attend it himself) allowes 5s for every Sermon he preaches The Chapple at RAUGHTON-HEAD (as it now stands) was built about 25 years agoe; and, upon raiseing a Competent Sum by the Inhabitants for the Support of a Eeader, was also consecrated by BP Rainbow: As this Inscription, over ye greater Door, testifies.”
