DESCRIPTION In the year 1870 it was my privilege to visit the Holy Land. Being then, as now, editor of the publications of the American Sunday-School Union, while journeying through that land a series of letters was written, both for The Sunday-School World and The Child’s World, giving an account of the interesting places visited there, in connection with the scenes referred to in the history of the Bible. These letters were continued after my return home, till all the places visited on that journey had been described. At the request of the Committee of Publication, those two series of letters have been combined together and thrown into the form of consecutive chapters, and so constitute, with considerable additional matter, the substance of the present volume. In preparing it, my hope has been that a book might thus be furnished that would be at once attractive to younger readers, and at the same time interesting and profitable to those of maturer years. If this hope should be realized in any good degree, I shall feel devoutly thankful. British Museum Integrated Catalogue entry.
