AUTHOR

Frederic Hale Forshall was the son of the Reverend Josiah Forshall (1795–1863), who worked at the British Museum. FH Forshall was a Queen’s Scholar at Westminster School and in 1848 won a scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge, but left there (for reasons unknown) a year later, when he was about 19 years old (i.e. born c1830) and came to Sydney. PUBLISHED

LONDON: WYMAN & SONS, 74-76, GREAT QUEEN STEEET,LINCOLN’S-INN FIELDS.1884.

DESCRIPTION

My primary aim in the following pages has been not so much to write a history of Westminster School, as to preserve some record of, those customs and usages of the School which, from the rapid changes in modern ideas of education, have in great part perished; and all of which, in the course of one or two more generations, will have probably become obsolete. Such customs and usages are valuable from their historical associations. They form part of that severe and exact discipline which has enabled a School, once beyond dispute the most famous in England, to send forth so many champions who have done valiantly in the Church, the Senate, and the Field. Other Public Schools may boast to have equal historical claims in this respect with Westminster; and if numerical excellence be the test we may be disposed to allow the equality. But no School, regarded as a unit, has placed its signature on the scroll of history in such clear and distinct characters as from time to time have been traced out by Westminster.

AUTHOR

Rev. Richard Newton. (1813 – 1887)

PUBLISHED

GALL AND INGLIS, 25 PATERNOSTER SQUARE; London

DESCRIPTION

In the year 1870 it was my privilege to visit the Holy Land. Being then, as now, editor of the publications of the American Sunday-School Union, while journeying through that land a series of letters was written, both for The Sunday-School World and The Child’s World, giving an account of the interesting places visited there, in connection with the scenes referred to in the history of the Bible. These letters were continued after my return home, till all the places visited on that journey had been described. At the request of the Committee of Publication, those two series of letters have been combined together and thrown into the form of consecutive chapters, and so constitute, with considerable additional matter, the substance of the present volume. In preparing it, my hope has been that a book might thus be furnished that would be at once attractive to younger readers, and at the same time interesting and profitable to those of maturer years. If this hope should be realized in any good degree, I shall feel devoutly thankful.

AUTHOR

Frederick Ponsonby, 1st Baron Sysonby (see wikipedia entry). Frederick Edward Grey Ponsonby, 1st Baron Sysonby GCB GCVO PC (16 September 186720 October 1935), was a British soldier and courtier. Engravings by Sir Emery Walker (April 2, 1851July 22, 1933) was an English engraver and printer. (see wikipedia entry)

PUBLISHED

Macmillan & Co., Ltd London, 1928

DESCRIPTION

The Empress Frederick died at Friedrichshof, Cronberg, 5th August 1901. The main purpose of this volume of the letters of the Empress Frederick has been to allow the Empress’s own words to provide the answer to those cruel and slanderous accusations from which her memory has suffered. For this reason the running commentary necessary to enable the reader to understand the letters has been reduced to the minimum. These letters, while fairly representing the thoughts and opinions of the Empress, give but a very imperfect picture of her character and personality. An advanced thinker of strong liberal views, she hesitated to express such views freely to Queen Victoria, to whom she knew they would not be acceptable. Moreover, the Empress’s many artistic activities had associated her with the world of art, where she had imbibed modern theories which did not appeal to the Queen. Consequently the letters hardly refer to those aesthetic tastes which were an outstanding feature in her life. The material available not being sufficient for a complete biography, the best course seemed to be to concentrate entirely on the letters. It may be urged that a publication must be premature in which, for judicious reasons, some interesting material has to be suppressed. On the other hand, to delay the production of these letters would be to postpone them for a new generation to whom the Empress Frederick would be unknown except as an historic figure.

The letters speak for themselves. They represent a regular weekly, almost daily, correspondence, characterised by the same dutiful tone on the part of the Empress and the same affectionate wisdom from Queen Victoria. In this volume of letters reference is made to more recent publications containing allusions to the Empress and in the majority of cases acknowledgment is made in the footnote. This, however, does not apply to several letters from Queen Victoria to the Empress and from the Empress to Queen Victoria which have already appeared in “The Letters of Queen Victoria”.

Master Musicians Beethoven, 1901, By Frederick J. Crowest

PUBLISHED

London: J. M. Dent & Co. New York: E. P. Dutton & Co. 1901

DESCRIPTION

No fault will be found in the choice of the subject of this book as the initial volume of the ” Master Musicians” Series. Beethoven has been the theme of many writers, which is not unaccountable when we consider his extraordinary personality, and the enormous reach of his musical works and influence. Among all the Beethoven literature, however, it has been difficult to find a handy volume, at once illuminative and concise—a book which, while it would appeal to the average musician, would provide the larger public of ordinary readers with a complete and proper view of the immortal master. It is hoped the present work will meet this deficiency. I trust the result of my effort will be to induce readers, especially young people, to make themselves more and more acquainted with the life and works of the mighty Beethoven—one of the greatest intellects who have ever graced the earth.

Telepathic Hallucinations, The New View of Ghosts, Frank Podmore

11,August, 2008

TITLE

Telepathic Hallucinations, The New View of Ghosts

AUTHOR

Frank Podmore (5 February 185614 August 1910) was an English author, founding member of the Fabian Society, and writer on psychic matters. See wikipedia entry. Author of ” Mesmerism and Christian Science” “The Naturalisation of the Supernatural” etc.

PUBLISHED

Published approximately 1910 (not stated in book), LONDON, MILNER & COMPANY LIMITED, PATERNOSTER ROW, AND RAGLAN WORKS, HALIFAX.

DESCRIPTION

“Do YOU believe in Ghosts ? Most educated men nowadays, it may be anticipated, would answer, No.
A majority, or at lowest, a substantial minority of educated Europeans, at any date within the last two hundred years, would probably have given a similar answer had the question been put to them. But by the greater number of the human race at the present day, and by learned and unlearned, civilised and uncivilised alike, at any previous period in the world’s history, an answer would unhesitatingly have been returned in the affirmative. In fact the belief in ghosts has been so widespread that it may almost be claimed as universal. The very conception of a future life is intimately bound up with the belief; it has left its traces on all the religions in the world. The elaborate arrangements for embalming the dead amongst the Egyptians, the offerings to the dead which formed part of the funeral ceremonies in early civilisations, and are still found throughout a great part of the world at the present day, are obviously associated with the belief or at least the hope of the survival of a quasi-material soul—a soul having form and substance, appetites and desires. Among the Egyptians the soul which was weighed in the balance and found wanting was doomed to be devoured by the Eater of the Dead……………….”

AUTHOR

George Louis Palmella Busson du Maurier (6 March 18348 October 1896) was a French-born British author and cartoonist.

PUBLISHED

LONDON, OSGOOD, MCILVAINE & CO., 45 ALBEMARLE STREET, W., MDCCCXCVI

DESCRIPTION

Trilby is a gothic horror novel by George du Maurier and one of the most popular novels of its time, perhaps the second best selling novel of the Fin de siècle period after Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Trilby is set in the 1850s in an idyllic bohemian Paris. Though it features the hijinks of three lovable English artists — especially the delicate genius Little Billee — its most memorable character is Svengali, a Jewish rogue, a masterful musician, and an irresistible hypnotist.

Trilby O’Ferrall, the novel’s heroine, is a magnificent half-Irish girl working in Paris as an artists’ model and laundress; all the men in the novel are in love with her. The relation between Trilby and Svengali forms only a small portion of the novel, which is mainly an evocation of a milieu, but it is a crucial one.
